The 2000 census included new and expanded categories of racial and ethnic identity by which U.S. residents could accurately identify themselves. In addition, it was the first time that residents were allowed to identify themselves as belonging to multiple ethnic categories, resulting in a more accurate portrait of the population. Mapping Census 2000: The Geography of U.S. Diversity presents this key set of data in vivid, full-color map images created with GIS technology. The result is a precise and comprehensive atlas of American diversity.
